Making a positive impact can come from even the simplest of solutions such as carpooling, eating locally sourced food or planting a tree. To commemorate Earth Day, we’re looking at how you can use automation to increase the energy efficiency of your home. Automatic Energy Savings One of the simplest ways you can reduce your impact on the planet is to remember to turn the lights off when you leave the room, but what if you didn’t have to remember? We have three unique ways you can gain energy savings automatically! Window Coverings A majority of your home’s heat and cold is lost through windows left bare. A single windowpane can lose up to ten times more heat than the same sized area of an uninsulated wall. By covering your windows with internal blinds and curtains, you can organically control the temperature in your home. Even better, placing your window coverings on the outside of your window gives you the advantage of blocking heat out in the summer and cold in the winter before it even reaches your window. External blinds can reduce your home’s heating and cooling by nearly 45%. That’s a lot less time that your heating and cooling systems need to be working, meaning there’s less pressure on the environment. Sensors It's even easier to preserve heat or cold when sensors do the work for you. Utilising sun, wind and temperature sensors means your solutions will work for you, depending on the weather. For example, during winter you can set your blinds to open during the day to let in the heat and close as the sun begins to go down to retain that heat! Automation Our favourite option is to automate your solutions completely. You don't even need to be home to manage your home's temperature. In winter, you can program your window coverings to close at dusk so if there's a drop in temperature and you're not home, the heat is kept in! In summer, you can program your blinds to lower at the hottest times of the day, or as soon as the temperature rises so your home stays cool and your air conditioner doesn't have to work overtime. With TaHoma, you can turn off all the lights in your home from your smartphone or set your lights on a schedule so you never have to remember to turn the lights off again.
